Summary

Who is Temi?

Temi (pronounced “Timmy”) is a robot designed primarily as a personal assistant and companion. Created by Robotemi, this smart robot is equipped with advanced artificial intelligence, voice recognition, and autonomous navigation capabilities. Temi can move around freely, interact with users through voice commands, and perform tasks such as answering questions, playing music, making video calls, and controlling smart home devices. Its 10.1-inch touchscreen allows for an intuitive interface, making it ideal for both home and business use, especially in settings like healthcare, hospitality, and customer service. Temi also features facial recognition and can follow users around, creating a personalized, hands-free experience. Its sleek, human-friendly design emphasizes accessibility and ease of use, making it a versatile tool for various environments.

Implementation in Healthcare

Temi is a highly adaptable platform made for custom development. In our case, we’ve integrated several specialized functionalities to enhance Temi’s effectiveness and versatility in healthcare environments.

We’ve integrated a smell sensor (developed by Smart Nanotubes) with the robot, which gathers data across 64 smell channels, along with temperature and humidity. This allows Temi to identify specific odors in real-time as it moves around. In environments like assisted living homes, Temi uses this feature to monitor bodily waste functions and quickly notify staff about potential issues. Additionally, the real-time temperature and humidity monitoring feature offers valuable insights in temperature-sensitive environments, like hospital floors, allowing for timely alerts when conditions deviate from the norm.

Temi also features real-time fall detection, further improving patient safety. The robot streams video to a computer vision system capable of detecting if someone has fallen, immediately alerting staff for rapid assistance. This is especially beneficial in healthcare settings like rehabilitation centers and nursing homes, where rapid intervention is crucial.

We’ve upgraded Temi’s conversational abilities by integrating a custom large language model created and accessed using LLM-Factory This allows Temi to hold natural conversations with users, helping patients in hospitals or nursing homes easily get answers about daily schedules or facility information. Additionally, Temi can interpret complex requests and autonomously carry out detailed tasks by leveraging a reasoning model. For example, a patient could simply say, “Tell the nurse I need help adjusting my bed,” and Temi would handle the entire process—from understanding the request, formatting the message appropriately, identifying the correct recipient, and delivering it—without requiring further input.

Results

This platform is currently in beta testing, with plans for full deployment in the near future.

In the meantime, we have included a subset of preliminary test results below. By analyzing scent data from various locations around our office and predicting the robot’s position based on this information, we achieved the following outcomes.

This shows Temi’s ability to accurately differentiate between the smells in different areas of the office, highlighting the potential for Temi to detect and classify odors that point to a hygiene issue in clinical environments.

Demo

In addition to patrolling our office for smell classification, Temi also acts as a greeter and a guide. The demonstration video below showcases these functions, along with Temi’s fall-detection capability:
